Lefkadia Valley is located on the northern slopes of the Caucasus mountains - close to the very cradle of vine and wine. Lefkadia – the land of the white poplar in Greek – has a winemaking history dating to the time of the ancient Greeks that founded colonies on the northern shores of the Black Sea. It has now become a Russian Protected Designation of Origin of wine.
While the climate of our valley is mild, a large difference between night and day temperatures is the key factor when it comes to crafting the fresh and aromatic wines that we are famous for. With two distinct soil types – limestone and clay – one can find a variety of styles that successfully coexist in this territory. From mineral, saline Chardonnays that make up Lefkadia’s famous sparkling wines to potent, spicy Cabernet Franc blends or fruit-forward Caucasian Saperavi. Our vines benefit from the higher altitude of our vineyards, as they remain protected from the frost that covers the Valley’s floor.
While traditional techniques such as orange wine made in Georgian Qvevri or Greek Pithos are revived, Lefkadia has also benefitted from a star-studded team of new winemakers led by the venerable Patrick Leon. Their work as head winemakers, viticulturalists and consultants has recently opened a new chapter in the history of these slopes – with a very positive reception from world-renown critics such as Mr. Mark Squires of Robert Parker, Ms. Jancis Robinson and Mr. Jamie Goode.
With new and exciting wines appearing every year, please take a look at this upcoming region that warrants recognition.
